Trauma-Focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) for Children and Young People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

 

This workshop is suitable for any mental health professional or other practitioner who wishes to
increase their knowledge of traumatic stress reactions and their treatment in children and young people, particularly the use of TF-CBT. Topics covered will include:

 

  • The cognitive model of PTSD
  • How children and young people commonly react to traumatic events (including the DSM-IV-TR diagnostic criteria of PTSD) and how the cognitive model can account for these
    reactions
  • The impact of developmental and systemic factors
  • How to intervene effectively using TF-CBT taking into account developmental and systemic factors
  • The research evidence concerning TF-CBT and other interventions for children and young people with PTSD

 

This one day workshop fulfils the criteria of two of the ESTSS workshops (Workshop F- Traumatic Stress Reactions in Children and Adolescents and Workshop G -Treatment of PTSD in Children and Adolescents). On successful completion of two sets of multiple choice questions, participants who have registered for the ESTSS General Certificate in Psychotraumatology will be eligible for 20 points.

 

The workshop will use a variety of training methods including interactive presentation of theory
with case illustrations (with clients’ consent), small group discussion to apply the theory to specific young people, and some skills practice.

 

Facilitator:

David Trickey is Lead Consultant Clinical Psychologist at the Child Bereavement and Trauma
Service in Luton and Bedfordshire. He has extensive clinical experience of working with children and families, and since 2000 has specialised in working with traumatised and traumatically bereaved children and adolescents. He acts as an Expert for the Courts, the Police and other organisations in relation to trauma and bereavement. He supervises and consults to other professionals, helping them to understand how traumatic events affect young people, and what can be done to help. He is actively involved in relevant research.
